When a pressure vessel safety valve opens to protect a boiler, vessel, or process system, the confidence placed in that valve rests on more than its spring and seat. It rests on a nameplate — a small metal tag stamped with letters, numbers, and symbols that certify the valve has been designed, tested, and marked to a recognised standard. Understanding pressure vessel safety valve marking requirements is essential for engineers, inspectors, and procurement professionals who specify or approve pressure relief equipment.

Why Safety Valve Marking Matters

Marking requirements for pressure vessel safety valves exist for three practical reasons: they confirm the valve was manufactured to a stated standard, they communicate critical operating parameters at a glance, and they establish traceability for inspection and maintenance records. Regulators and insurance surveyors treat the absence of correct marking as grounds to reject a valve regardless of its physical condition.

CE Marking under PED 2014/68/EU

For safety valves supplied into European markets — or exported to countries that accept CE-marked equipment — the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU) is the primary regulatory framework. A CE mark on a pressure vessel safety valve confirms that the manufacturer has assessed the valve against PED requirements, prepared a Technical Construction File, and issued a Declaration of Conformity. Valves in Category III or IV require assessment by a Notified Body.

  • EN ISO 4126-1 is the harmonised standard most commonly referenced for spring-loaded safety valves under PED

EN ISO 4126-1 Nameplate Requirements

EN ISO 4126-1 (Safety Devices for Protection Against Excessive Pressure — Spring-Loaded Safety Valves) specifies the minimum information that must appear on the nameplate of a compliant safety valve. This standard is internationally recognised and aligned with ISO requirements.

  • Manufacturer name or trademark
  • Type designation or model number
  • Serial number (for individual traceability)
  • Set pressure in bar
  • Relieving capacity in kg/h or m³/h at set conditions
  • Inlet and outlet size and connection standard
  • Body material designation
  • Maximum allowable temperature
  • Certificate number and CE mark with Notified Body number

IBR Marking — Indian Boiler Regulations

In India, pressure vessels and boilers are governed by the Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR). For steam-service safety valves fitted to IBR-registered boilers and pressure vessels, the valve must carry an IBR stamp applied after inspection and approval by an IBR-authorised inspecting authority. IBR-approved safety valves are mandatory for all steam boilers operating above 1 kg/cm² in India.

ASME UV Stamp

For projects following ASME standards, safety valves for pressure vessel service carry the ASME UV stamp, issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) after auditing the manufacturer's quality system and witnessing capacity testing at an ASME-accredited laboratory. Each valve is also assigned an NB (National Board) number for full traceability.

Reading a Safety Valve Nameplate

  • Set pressure: must match the vessel's MAWP or approved overpressure protection calculation
  • Orifice designation: letter code or actual area in mm², used to verify discharge capacity
  • Back pressure rating: for balanced bellows or pilot-operated designs
  • Temperature rating: maximum process temperature for seat materials and spring selection
  • Material code: body and trim material referenced against standard designations

Selecting Correctly Marked Safety Valves

  • Match the marking standard to the vessel design code: ASME VIII → UV stamp; PED → CE mark (EN ISO 4126); Indian boilers → IBR stamp
  • Verify the set pressure on the nameplate matches the approved overpressure study
  • Check certified relieving capacity covers 100% of the worst-case scenario
  • Retain test certificates and Declaration of Conformity in plant documentation
  • Reject valves with damaged or illegible nameplates before installation
